We are a Hong Kong-based, Asia-focused environmental NGO on a mission to accelerate the transition to a circular fashion industry by educating and empowering designers and consumers in order to reduce clothing’s negative environmental impacts.

Our programmes primarily target fashion designers and consumers. We also work with brands, manufacturers, research institutions, schools and corporates. We work to create better ways to design, produce, purchase, use and recycle clothing.

Although our work has global reach, we are proudly Asia-focused, since Asia is the world’s largest producer and consumer of textiles and apparel.

Redress Limited, founded in 2007, is a registered charitable institution under Section 88 of The Inland Revenue Ordinance of Hong Kong, charity number 91/9246.

OUR JOURNEY

Redress has been working to inspire positive change in the fashion industry since 2007. Take a look at some of our highlights throughout the years.

2023

We launched our first industry report supported by the VF Foundation investigating the role, influence, and opportunity for circular fashion designers.

We officially signed a memorandum of understanding with the Shenzhen Garment Industry Association (SGIA), organisers of Shenzhen Fashion Week.

We hosted our first ever Wear Secondhand Day in October, inviting the public to raise awareness for the fashion waste crisis and donate to Redress.

We kicked off our Get Redressed School Ambassadors Programme, training students to promote circular fashion in school.

 

2022

In partnership with the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF), we publish Yoyo and the World’s Coolest T-shirt, a children’s comic book about transforming clothing waste.

Our Jeans and the Planet’ is launched: an interactive site that takes visitors behind the scenes into the manufacturing of the ultimate wardrobe staple – a pair of jeans.

We unveil new improvements to the Redress Academy, our free multilingual online resource with in-depth content on circular fashion design topics.

A new ‘Rising Talents’ programme is also launched for stand-out applicants of the Redress Design Award to enhance their circular fashion skills and techniques.

 

2021

Forging partnerships with leading fashion retailers, Redress turns its Takeback Programme long-term with over 20 clothing collection boxes across various retail locations across Hong Kong.

The Redress Closet, our very own permanent secondhand clothing store, opens in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. The shop offers a curated selection of quality goods at accessible prices, encouraging consumers to give secondhand a try.

 

2020

We launch our Circular Fashion Design Course to provide deeper knowledge on circular fashion design for fashion designers and students

The Redress Design Award celebrates 10 years and, for the first time, the Grand Final Fashion Show is hosted in a live-digital format.

Dress [with] Sense launches in Russian.

 In partnership with the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF) and the Environmental Campaign Committee, we launch our ECF Circular Fashion Education Toolkit to equip primary and secondary students and teachers with interactive resources for understanding sustainability issues in fashion.

 

2019

 For our second Get Redressed Month, we expand our influence with the creation of a school resources pack and online hub.

We soft-launch our year-round clothing takeback programme to empower consumers in keeping clothes in use longer.

We partner with Swire Group and internationally acclaimed textile artist Derick Melander on a public art installation to raise awareness of clothing waste.

 

2018

The EcoChic Design Award is rebranded to the Redress Design Award. The competition also expands to accept applications worldwide.

Dress [with] Sense launches in Korean.

We launch our first Get Redressed Month, an annual consumer campaign for the Hong Kong public to discover more conscious choices about clothing consumption.

 

2017

Redress celebrates 10 years working to create positive change in the fashion industry.

Our first consumer book, Dress [with] Sense, is published by Thames & Hudson in English and French.

Redress Founder, Christina Dean makes the bold decision to start The R Collective, a social impact business creating affordable upcycled luxury fashion, that collaborates with Redress alumni designers on capsule collections for retail.

 

2016

Our partner, Shanghai Tang retails their inaugural up-cycled collection in their flagship stores, designed by The EcoChic Design Award 2015/16 winner.

Our first TV documentary, ‘Frontline Fashion’, broadcasts on Fashion One.

 

2015

The EcoChic Design Award opens to all Asia and Europe, making it the biggest sustainable design competition in the world.

We are featured in the ground-breaking documentary, The True Cost.

Our ‘Y Waste’ exhibition fundamentally questions audiences and our Keep Caring Clothing Drive, with partner Miele, expands.

 

2014

The EcoChic Design Award takes a giant leap to include eight regions in Asia and Europe, with Ford Motor Company and Shanghai Tang new to the sponsorship family.

Our Founder, Christina Dean gives her TEDx ‘You Are What You Wear’ talk to engage consumers whilst our #GetRedressed social media campaign attracts supporters around the world.

 

2013

Our Founder, Christina Dean wears only dumped secondhand clothes for 365 days, grabbing media headlines around the world.

We start a long-term partnership with PizzaExpress Hong Kong that includes consumer education workshops and secondhand pop-up shops.

Two lines of the Recycled Collection by Esprit retail, each designed by EcoChic Design Award winners. Our R Cert recycled textile standard expands its footprint alongside Esprit’s collection in the Asia Pacific region to aid transparency in recycling.

 

2012

 Our first EcoChic Design Award winner designs the inaugural Recycled Collection by Esprit, which hits retail in Hong Kong.

Redress and the EcoChic Design Award expands in China with an extensive university lecture series and our two Grand Final Fashion Shows storm Shanghai Fashion Week and Hong Kong Fashion Week .

 

2011

We launch The EcoChic Design Award, a sustainable fashion design competition for emerging designers in Hong Kong, with sponsors including Create Hong Kong of SAR (Special Administrative region) and Esprit. Our first Redress Forum attracts top-tier speakers, including representatives from Levis and the Hong Kong Government.

We partner with leading Hong Kong fashion designers who transform dumped clothing waste into ‘new’ high-end designs that retail at Harvey Nichols Hong Kong.

 We partner with Miele to build our 3% Mountain installation made from clothing waste.

 

2010

We partner with The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development on a sustainable fashion show, seminar and exhibition at Geneva’s Palais de Nations.

 Pioneers including EDUN and Lie Sang Bong join our runway and we entice high-profile speakers from Gucci and Made-By. An exhibition trail ensues that sees us featured in Milan and Singapore.

 

2009

‘EcoChic’ goes to Shanghai as we host China’s first big sustainable fashion show featuring Chinese designers.

 

2008

Our first ‘EcoChic’ fashion shows roll out in Jakarta and Hong Kong boasting sustainable designs by the likes of Diane von Furstenberg and Barney Cheng and drawing in partners including UBS and Tatler.

 

2007

Asia´s first environmental NGO focused on the fashion industry is founded by Christina Dean in Hong Kong.
